S&P Global Ratings Launches Vault Risk Assessment for DeFi Markets
S&P Global Ratings unveiled a new framework to evaluate risk in onchain investment vehicles, expanding its footprint in decentralized finance.
S&P Global Ratings introduced its Vault Risk Assessment on Oct. 5, 2026, a new analytical framework designed to bring independent risk transparency to digital asset markets, the firm announced from Singapore. The product targets onchain investment vehicles — a fast-growing segment of decentralized finance where standardized risk evaluation has historically been scarce.
The Vault Risk Assessment, or VRA, represents an extension of S&P Global's existing offerings across the DeFi landscape. By applying structured, ratings-grade analysis to onchain vaults, the firm aims to give institutional and retail participants a clearer picture of the risk profiles embedded in these products.

The move reflects broader momentum among traditional financial institutions to build credibility and analytical infrastructure around blockchain-based assets. S&P Global, traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SPGI, occupies a position of significant influence in global credit and risk markets, lending institutional weight to the new framework's reception.
The launch underscores growing demand for independent due diligence tools as decentralized finance matures and attracts larger pools of capital. Whether the VRA becomes an industry benchmark will depend on market adoption and how onchain asset managers respond to third-party risk classifications.
