Bloomberg Automates Japanese Government Bond Market-on-Close Trading
Bloomberg completed the first fully automated JGB Market-on-Close trade, advancing efficiency in Japan's government bond market.
Bloomberg Electronic Markets executed the first fully automated Japanese Government Bond Market-on-Close trade on Oct. 4, 2026, marking a significant operational shift in how participants access Japan's sovereign debt market. The milestone followed the introduction of a new workflow designed to streamline the end-of-day pricing process.
The automated system aligns with BB3P, also known as Hikene Trading, the established Market-on-Close reference rate for Japanese Government Bonds. That benchmark rate is widely used by institutional investors to value and settle JGB positions, making automation of the associated trading workflow a meaningful development for market participants who rely on efficient, accurate execution at the close.

The move reflects a broader industry push to reduce manual intervention in fixed-income markets, where legacy workflows have historically required significant human coordination, particularly around benchmark-linked trades. By automating the Market-on-Close process, Bloomberg aims to lower operational risk and improve consistency for clients transacting at the BB3P rate.
Japan's government bond market is one of the largest in the world, and any enhancement to its trading infrastructure carries implications for both domestic institutions and international investors with JGB exposure. The successful first trade signals that the new workflow is operational and available for broader adoption.
